To share contact on WhatsApp as a card, open the chat, tap the attach icon, choose Contact and pick your own entry; the other person gets a card they can add to their phone. For work, paste a digital business card link instead, so the person sees your photo, links and a save button. Both take under a minute.
Four ways to share contact on WhatsApp
WhatsApp gives you four practical ways to share your contact details, and each one lands differently on the other phone. Pick based on what you want the person to do next: save you, message you, or learn more about you.
| Method | What the recipient gets | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Contact attachment | A contact card from your address book | Friends, quick one-off sharing |
| Digital card link | A link preview that opens your full card | Clients, leads, networking |
| WhatsApp QR code | An image that adds you as a WhatsApp contact when scanned | People standing next to you |
| Click to chat link | A link that opens a chat with you | Customers who should message first |
My take: if the conversation is about work, send the link. A contact attachment carries only what’s in your address book entry, and it’s out of date the day you change jobs.
How to send your contact card from a WhatsApp chat
The Contact option in WhatsApp’s attach menu sends any entry from your phone’s address book, including your own. WhatsApp’s help page describes it as a way “to send the information of a contact saved in your phone’s address book over WhatsApp” (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Make sure you’re saved in your own contacts. On iPhone, that’s My Card at the top of the Contacts app (Apple Support).
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the attach icon (the paperclip on Android, the plus on iPhone).
- Choose Contact, then your name.
- Send it.
The person sees a card with your name and taps it to add you, no typing needed.
How to share a contact from your phone’s Contacts app
You can also start in the Contacts app and pick WhatsApp from the share menu. This route lets you choose which fields go out.
- iPhone: tap the contact, tap Share Contact, choose the fields you want, tap Done, then pick a sharing option (Apple Support).
- Android: in Google Contacts, open the contact, use the menu at the top right and tap Share. Sharing your own info sends a VCF file, and Google notes some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up (Google Contacts Help).
A VCF file is a vCard, the standard format for electronic business cards that phones and CRMs read (Wikipedia). If you want the detail on what’s inside one, see what a vCard file is.
How to share a digital business card link on WhatsApp
A digital business card link is the better choice for work, because it shows your photo, company and links, and it updates when you edit the card. WhatsApp turns a message with a single link into a preview (WhatsApp Help Center), so put the link on its own or with one short line.
Priya, a realtor, meets a buyer at an open house and asks for their WhatsApp. She sends: “Great meeting you today, here’s my card” and then her link on the next line. The buyer taps it, sees her listings link, and taps Save Contact.
Most guides on this topic come from card apps, and they agree: paste the card link into the chat, or send a QR code that points to the card rather than a screenshot. They’re right. A screenshot of a card is just a picture: nobody can tap a number in it.
How QRCard handles WhatsApp sharing
QRCard cards open in any browser, so the person you send the link to doesn’t need an app. Their Save Contact button downloads a .vcf file that opens in iPhone or Android Contacts. The Free plan includes the link, a QR download and Contacts save; the one-tap social share buttons (WhatsApp, Telegram, LinkedIn, email) are on Pro at $4.99/month. You can also set your phone number to Button only or Hidden, in case the link gets forwarded.
The limitation: a link costs one more tap than a contact attachment. For a friend who just wants your number, send the attachment.
How to use WhatsApp’s own QR code and click to chat link
WhatsApp’s built-in QR code and click to chat links help people message you, but they don’t send your full contact details. Use them when the goal is a conversation, not a saved card.
To share your WhatsApp QR code on Android, go to More options > Settings, tap the QR code next to your name, tap share and pick a contact or app (WhatsApp Help Center). WhatsApp warns: “Only share your WhatsApp QR code with trusted individuals.” Anyone who gets it can forward it, and others could then add you by scanning.
A click to chat link lets someone start a chat without saving your number first, on their phone or WhatsApp Web (WhatsApp Help Center). The format is https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format. WhatsApp says to omit any zeroes, brackets or dashes, so a plus sign and spaces break it too. Add ?text= and a URL-encoded message to pre-fill what the customer types.
For a code people scan in person, our guide on sharing contact info with a QR code covers the options.
Can you share WhatsApp contact details without your phone number?
WhatsApp usernames are an optional handle, such as @Name123, that lets people reach you without seeing your number. People who don’t have your number saved see the username instead, and you can make a QR code or link that points to it (WhatsApp Help Center).
The catches: a phone number is still required for the account, and usernames are rolling out gradually, so yours may not be live yet. There’s no searchable directory either, so people need your exact username.
What goes wrong when you share contact details on WhatsApp
Most failed shares come from an outdated address book entry, a broken wa.me number, or a card the recipient can’t save.
- Old details: the Contact attachment sends whatever is in your entry. Check your own card before you send it.
- Broken click to chat link: a number with a leading zero, dashes or brackets won’t open a chat.
- Card won’t save on Android: if a .vcf from a link doesn’t open, our guide to saving a contact from a QR code on Android walks through the fixes.
- Too much shared: a forwarded link or QR code travels further than you planned. Hide fields you don’t want public.
If you also network on LinkedIn, the same card link works there; see how to share your business card on LinkedIn.
FAQ
Can I send my own contact card on WhatsApp?
Yes. Save yourself as a contact (on iPhone that’s My Card), then open a chat, tap the attach icon, choose Contact and pick your own entry. The other person gets a contact card they can add to their phone.
Is a contact card or a link better on WhatsApp?
A contact card is quickest for one-off sharing with a friend. A digital card link is better for work, because it carries your links and photo and stays current when your details change.
How do I let someone message me on WhatsApp without saving my number?
Send a click to chat link in the form wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format. WhatsApp says to leave out any zeroes, brackets or dashes.
Can I share my WhatsApp without giving out my phone number?
WhatsApp usernames let you share a handle such as @Name123 instead of your number. They are rolling out gradually and may not be available on your account yet.
